At Go Smart Zanzibar Tours, we’ve been guiding travelers through the lush spice plantations of Zanzibar for years, drawing on our deep-rooted local knowledge and passion for the island’s rich heritage.

Whether you’re a culinary enthusiast or a curious traveler, this guide will help you navigate the world of Zanzibar spices like a pro. And the best part?

We’ll show you why joining our Spice Farm Tour is the ultimate way to discover, taste, and purchase these treasures authentically—ensuring you bring home the freshest flavors while supporting sustainable local communities.

Why Zanzibar is the Ultimate Destination for Spice Tours

Zanzibar, often called the “Spice Island,” has been a global hub for spices since the 19th century, when Omani sultans transformed its fertile soil into plantations that still thrive today.

The island’s tropical climate and volcanic soil produce some of the world’s highest-quality organic spices, exported to kitchens worldwide.

Buying spices here isn’t just shopping—it’s immersing yourself in a centuries-old tradition that blends history, culture, and cuisine.

According to local experts, the best spices like cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg are grown organically, offering unmatched freshness and potency compared to store-bought varieties back home.

But to truly appreciate this, you need more than a market visit—you need an expert-led tour to see the spices in their natural habitat.

Top 10 Best Spices to Buy in Zanzibar

Based on our extensive experience and feedback from thousands of tour participants, here are the must-buy spices in Zanzibar.

We’ve selected these for their quality, versatility, and the island’s reputation as a top producer.

Each one is harvested fresh, often organically, and can elevate your cooking for months (or even years) when stored properly in airtight containers away from light and heat.

Cloves

Zanzibar produces over 80% of the world’s cloves, known for their warm, sweet aroma and eugenol-rich oil that’s perfect for baking, teas, and meat rubs.

Buy whole buds for maximum freshness—they last up to two years. On our tours, you’ll pick them straight from the tree and learn their medicinal uses.

Cinnamon

Derived from the bark of evergreen trees, Zanzibar’s cinnamon is intensely flavorful, ideal for curries, desserts, and hot drinks.

It’s milder and sweeter than common varieties, with anti-inflammatory benefits. Sticks store well for 3-4 years.

Nutmeg

Updated Zanzibar Spice Tour 05 min

This nutty, warm spice from the Myristica tree is a Zanzibar staple, used in sauces, soups, and baked goods. Freshly grated, it’s far superior to pre-ground—expect it to last 2-3 years whole.

During our spice tour, our guides show you how to crack the shell for the best flavor.

Cardamom

cadomon zanzbar

With its citrusy, minty notes, green cardamom pods from Zanzibar enhance chai, rice dishes, and sweets. It’s one of the island’s premium exports—pods keep fresh for up to a year.

Fresh and zesty, Zanzibar ginger is used in teas, stir-fries, and remedies.

Dried slices or powder store for up to a year, but nothing beats the fresh roots you’ll harvest on tour.

vannila

Pods from Zanzibar orchids offer a rich, floral sweetness for baking and infusions. High-quality beans cure for months and last 1-2 years in a cool place.

Chili (Red Chilies)

chilli

For heat lovers, these dried peppers add spice to sauces and marinades. They’re sun-dried for intense flavor and can last over a year.

Saffron

Saffron

Though not as traditional, some Zanzibar farms grow this luxurious spice with its honey-like notes for rice and teas. Threads are pricey but potent—a small amount goes far and stores for 2 years.

These spices aren’t just ingredients; they’re a piece of Zanzibar’s soul.

Our team’s expertise ensures you get authentic, high-quality picks—far better than generic supermarket versions.

Expert Tips for Buying Spices in Zanzibar

o make the most of your spice shopping and avoid common pitfalls, follow these tips drawn from our years of guiding visitors:

  • Shop at Authentic Sources: Head to markets like Darajani in Stone Town or Kinyasini for the freshest deals, but for the best experience, buy directly from farms during a tour to ensure organic quality and fair prices.
  • Check for Freshness: Look for vibrant colors, strong aromas, and whole forms (e.g., buds or sticks) over powders, which can be adulterated. Spices like cloves and cinnamon should feel slightly oily.
  • Negotiate Smartly: Prices are often flexible in markets, but aim for 20-50% off the starting quote. In tourist areas, expect higher markups—our tours connect you with trusted farmers for transparent pricing.
  • Buy in Bulk Wisely: Purchase small quantities if traveling, as spices lose potency over time. Vacuum-sealed packs from reputable sellers extend shelf life.
  • Avoid Tourist Traps: Skip overpriced airport stalls or street vendors pushing “exotic” blends—opt for guided experiences to guarantee authenticity.
  • Storage and Shelf Life: Store in cool, dark places. Whole spices last longer (1-4 years) than ground (6-12 months). Pro tip: Label with purchase dates!

By following these, you’ll return home with spices that transport you back to Zanzibar with every meal.

Great service, very helpful and responsive. We were 6 people (parents, 3 adult children and a 13 y old son) and did all our tours with GoSmart Zanzibar: Stone Town, Spice Tour and Prison Island, Mnemba and Turtle, Jazani Forest and Safari Blue. We also used their services for sone transfers. Said has been incredibly responsive, at all times, and flexible when one of us got sick and he allowes us to postpine the tour by one day at no cost even if only notified the evening before. Ali, our driver, very polite, helpful, and a very good driver in not always easy driving conditions. Amazing people and amazing week!

Amazing experience with go smart Zanzibar Tours and safari The excursion was amazing with professional and kind staff. The driver picked us up on time and allowed us to enjoy every spot. Started with mnemba island for dolphins and snorkeling, then the aquarium swimming with turtles, then kendwa beach. And awesome long and wide beach with very clear water, white sandy beach with lots of water sport activities and finished with sunset cruise which was epic. The driver waited patiently the while day and back to out hotel in the evening. I would recommended this your company and looking forward to doing another excursion with them.
